Where I share my holiday play list

I’m certain that it’s not really a surprise to any of y’all that I enjoy music . . . and Christmas music falls into that realm. I won’t listen before December, but I love the mix of sincere & cheesy. Years ago, I started making my holiday playlist, with a few simple rules: any artist may only appear once on the album (unless said artist is related to me), and the the album must fit on a standard-length CD. So, without further ado, I present this year’s playlist:

  • Belle & Sebastian, O Come, O Come Emmanuel
  • Mighty Mighty Bosstones, This Time Of Year
  • Lionel Richie, Joy To The World
  • The Royal Guardsmen, Snoopy Vs. The Red Baron
  • Tracy Chapman, O Holy Night
  • Transsiberian Orchestra, Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12-24
  • Sixpence None the Richer, Angels We Have Heard On High
  • U2, Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)
  • The Waitresses, Christmas Wrapping
  • Stevie Wonder, What Christmas Means To Me
  • Barenaked Ladies & Sarah Mclachlan, God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman/We Three Kings
  • Bob Dylan, Must Be Santa
  • Colbie Caillat, Mistletoe
  • Bing Crosby & David Bowie, Peace on Earth / Little Drummer Boy
  • The Killers, Boots
  • Wham!, Last Christmas
  • Stephen Colbert & Elvis Costello, There Are Much Worse Things To Believe In
  • Dido, Christmas Day
  • Dave Matthews Band, Christmas Song
  • Sting, Gabriel’s Message

  1. YES I LOVE THIS! So even though I’m Jewish, the 27 years of being christianish brought fond memories of Christmas. I absolutely adore the BNL rendition of God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen. I also love Barbara Streisand’s coked-up version of Jingle Bells.

    1. You know what I do every Sunday — religion is not a very important part of “me,” but I do love the Christmas season – especially the music it brings.

    1. You know, it only took me about 20 minutes – I’m quite good at the Google-Fu. I exported the playlist from iTunes to a TXT file, copied each artist/song title into Google, right-clicked on and selected “Copy Embed HTML” from the video, and went onto the next.

      Knowing HTML helps.

  2. Such a good list! I found a new one for my list (Belle & Sebastian’s cover: I love the serious, classic hymns and carols), confirmed my own excellent taste in the crossovers, and had a lovely giggle over Wham!

    1. I found the Belle & Sebastian cover a few years ago, and it’s my absolute favorite. There are some tunes that appear on my list each & every year – and that has made it to the “must include, always” level. I, seriously, can’t listen to it enough.

And Wham! is wonderfully cheesy, aren’t they?

  3. First time visitor here. I love:

    1) The Dido selection. *fist pump*

    2) The fact that you correctly said “without further ado.” Do you know how many people say “without further adieu?” I want to throw punches when I read that. So good on you.

    1. ACK, “without further adieu?” Really?! I can’t say that I’ve ever seen that – but, yeah, that would make me want to throw punches, too. Without further goodbye . . . wow.

      Just, wow.

I’m not a grammar snob (wait, yes, I am), but what you write has to make sense!

      /rant over

Anyway, welcome! I love new visitors!

  4. I’m tardy for the party, but you can bet I’m going to be bookmarking your list for next year. I love me some good Christmas music. But for some reason, I think my prematurity in playing it starting November 1 kind of burned me out. Note to self for this year.
